The Driver
He loved the road, the freedom, and the way it made him feel
and how the wheel turned in his hand...his mastery over steel
no boring desk could hold him or arrest his interest there
there were just too many sights to see out on the road somewhere
He stayed close by his family as we were growing up
but when we'd grown, he climbed on board and set out in a truck
and the tales he’d tell of travels let us know he’d finally found
a place where he felt quite at home...wheels rolling over ground
So we’d listen to his stories, his jokes and turns of phrase
for he loved to share his laughter and his tales of olden days
we saw the twinkle in his eyes, as he claimed to be the best...
Made many a trip, logged many a mile before he stopped to rest
But stop to rest he did today, his run at last complete
now he’s traveling up God’s highway...angels by him on the seat
and he’s sharing all his stories of the life he had down here
while Jesus smiles and chuckles as he bekons Daddy near
And all of heaven’s angels...the saints, the Father and Son
are congratulating Daddy on a "dickens" of a run!
